Journalist cover May/June 08

If we can’t get it right …

I RECEIVED the NUJ code of conduct campaign literature on March 12 with instructions to distribute the code to the chapel. After reading Jeremy Dear’s letter, which declared that the ‘NUJ has always stood for the highest standards’, I noticed that article 8 of the code doesn’t make sense: ‘Resists, threats or any other inducements to influence, distort or suppress information’. A pesky comma had done its worst. If we want people to stand up for journalism and take it and the union seriously, we must at the very least ensure our code is properly subbed.
