Awards commemorate old-school reporters

Features on comedian Freddie Starr and Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson won an NUJ Bournemouth Branch award for Daily Echo arts and entertainment editor Jeremy Miles.

Winning the judges’ prize in the branch’s Hammond Whiteley Awards, he was one of four honoured in the awards established 25 years ago in memory of two Daily Echo journalists, John Hammond and Carl Whiteley, who died suddenly within five days of each other in 1981.

Jeremy Miles has spent 37 years in journalism. He worked on the Folkestone Herald and Kentish Gazette before joining the then Evening Echo — now the Daily Echo, Bournemouth — 21 years ago.

Young Journalist of the Year went to Miriam Phillips, 24, of the Dorset Echo based in Weymouth. She won the Jane Hayward Trophy in memory of a talented Daily Echo reporter who died at the age of 27 following a long illness.

Photographer of the Year was Bournemouth freelance John Beasley. His award remembers Harry Ashley who was chief photographer at the Daily Echo in Bournemouth.

Journalist of the Year was Daily Echo reporter Julie Magee.

All four winners represent the legacy left by Hammond and Whiteley: “John and Carl were the cream of reporters of the old school — devoted to their craft, hard-working, conscientious, painstakingly accurate in everything they did and helpful and encouraging to their younger colleagues,” said Bournemouth and Dorset Branch Chair Martyn Benn.
