23 go in ‘brutal’ TM sackings
NUJ Northern Organiser Chris Morley has condemned the “brutal” sacking of 23 staff by Trinity Mirror.
NUJ members at eight Midlands titles discovered by memo that their papers were to close and that they should clear their desks and leave that day.
None of the papers targeted had union recognition.
“This announcement has come as a bombshell to staff and seems to have been done in quite a brutal way,” said Chris Morley.
“We are told that journalists on the affected papers were given just an hour to clear their desks and go.
“How that squares with proper consultation over redundancy I don’t know.
“It appears the company has closed its mind to finding other solutions to whatever problems management thought these newspapers had.”
