Union member is murdered in Kenya
Photojournalist Trent Keegan, an NUJ member, was murdered in Nairobi in late May. A native of New Zealand, he had spent many years working in Ireland as a freelance.
His friend, photographer Brian MacCormaic, said he was working on an important story before he was killed, trying to expose the exploitation of the Masai people of Tanzania and Kenya.
“Many people, including the Kenyan police, are very suspicious why Trent’s passport, along with cash worth about $60 and his Visa cards and other valuables were found on his body, while his laptop, camera and mobile phone were the only things stolen,” he said.
NUJ Cork branch Chair Billy MacGill expressed condolences to Trent’s family in New Zealand and to his many friends in Ireland and across the freelance photographic community. He described Trent as “a guy who loved being a photographer and who loved to travel”.
Trent Keegan was the winner of several Irish Professional Photographers Association awards and had worked in Darfur and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
