‘Silent rejection’ will wreck freelance system
I read with great interest Mark Fisher’s letter (May/June 2008) on the modern culture of editors ignoring freelancers’ copy/ideas through “silent rejection”.
It is vital that, if a publication doesn’t want a contribution, then the journalist is able to pitch it elsewhere to make a living, or the nature of the freelance system begins to break down.
Good features, and in some cases investigative journalism, are being lost forever — creating a very worrying culture in a digitally dominated and online age.
