All-rounder’s passions for jazz and sport

DEREK EVANS, who died aged 82 in May, was a South Wales miner’s son who became a photographer, writer, reporter and filmmaker.

He was an associate of the Royal Photographic Society at the age of 26 and set up a freelance firm that fed stories to the nationals and top magazines, before moving into television news and feature filming.

Derek served 14 years as an officer of the union’s Hereford branch and was a Liberal councillor in the city.

Derek’s leisure enthusiasms were sport and jazz.

He played amateur non-league soccer for Shrewsbury Town and was a club cricketer and captain of Hereford golf club.
