Astounded by competition for council job

I RECENTLY applied for a position as media assistant for a county council in the South East, a bottom-rung-of-the-ladder position that would usually attract new graduates and first-jobbers.

So, with five-plus years experience in local and national journalism, you can imagine my embarrassment when I was asked to attend an interview for the job.

I came away astounded. I was told by the interviewer that not only had this junior position attracted more than 200 applicants, but that the majority of these were fully trained, experienced journalists.

Of course this council was rubbing its hands together at the prospect of appointing a first-class journalist on the lowest end of the pay scale.

I’m certain this is happening across the county. What a sorry state the industry is in.
