GUARDIAN editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger received salary and benefits of £401,000 in the past financial year — a 13 per cent pay hike. Chief executive Carolyn McCall picked up £827,000, including a salary of £424,000, a bonus of £385,000 and benefits in kind of £18,000, adding up to a 23 per cent gain on the £670,000 she earned in the last financial year. Tim Brooks, the managing director of GUARDIAN NEWS & MEDIA, received a package of £386,000, including a salary of £240,000 and a bonus of £146,000. Mark Dodson — chief executive of Manchester Evening News publisher GMG Regional Media — was on £403,000, including a salary of £226,000 and a bonus of £153,000.
Rupert Murdoch has taken a pay cut. A regulatory filing in the US shows that the NEWS CORP chairman saw his total compensation package fall from $32.1 million to $27.6 million (£15.0 million) last year, a decline of just over 14 per cent. Accounting changes to the value of his pension is responsible for most of the difference. His other half Wendi got $100,000 and 2.5 per cent share options in MySpace China for consultancy services. Meanwhile, the boy James was paid around $11 million in salary, bonus and other compensation for his first six months as head of News Corp’s European and Asian assets
TRINITY MIRROR chief executive Sly Bailey received pay of £1.5m last year, including her full bonus entitlement of £793,000. Does she deserve that much dosh? Has she added much shareholder value? Well, given the profit warning that knocked £110 million off the value of the company’s shares in one single day, as circulations continue to fall, there may well be grounds for doubt.
Book bosses are doing quite nicely too. John Makinson, head of PENGUIN, received £1.4 million last year, while BLOOMSBURY chief executive Nigel Newton was on £740,000.
