GLASTONBURY FOUR
NUJ MEMBERS enjoyed such sun as there was in Britain’s record-breaking cool summer at union events. A team of activists took part in the Leftfield at the Glastonbury festival in July. Led by General Secretary Jeremy Dear they helped run the Leftfield blog and organise films and speaking events.
Schmooze cruise
IT WAS PRs ahoy as members of the NUJ Press and PR branch in London boarded a canal boat for their annual summer evening cruise. Among those on board were union national organiser Sue Harris, NUJ communications officer Stephen Pearse, branch chair Mick Gosling, NUJ President James Doherty, John Wilson, assistant organiser Fiona Swarbrick and Jane Hammond.
FOI Victory
Union members have won a Freedom of Information victory over the Health and Safety executive with a ruling from the Information Commissioner that it must reveal to the Centre for Corporate Accountability the names of people who die at work. The centre is a research body that also campaigns against deaths at work.
Michelle begins work
Michelle Stanistreet, elected as NUJ Deputy General Secretary in July, was taking up the post on September 8. Among other duties she will be working on a new recruitment campaign for the union. She was NUJ President last year as a newspaper representative on the national executive. There will now be a by-election for the executive seat.
