Rising career that was boosted by union Fund
A JOURNALIST whose career was boosted by a scholarship from the NUJ’s George Viner Memorial Fund has won her second “Young Journalist of the Year” award.
Cara Simpson (pictured), a reporter on the Coventry Evening Telegraph, was a beneficiary in 2005 of the union charity that offers grants to journalism students from ethnic minorities.
In October she won the Daily Mail-sponsored young journalist prize in the Asia Media & Marketing Group’s Leadership and Diversity Awards, for a series of campaigning stories. Last year she was honoured as Newcomer of the Year in the Birmingham Press Awards.
“The grant was crucial for me,” she says. “Without it I would never have been able to get my foot on the ladder.”
So great is her appreciation that she has become a trustee of the George Viner fund herself.
