Greatly missed

THE UNION’S Manchester branch bade farewell to a long-time BBC activist when NUJ Member of Honour Alan Knowles left the area after 60 years of union activity.

He was a branch secretary until 1959 when he went to work for the BBC in London. After 18 months he returned as a news producer at BBC Manchester where he became Father of the Chapel. He has held posts in the branch ever since.

Now he is moving to live with his family in Scotland. Branch chair Chris Rea said: “We are very sad to be saying goodbye to Alan; he will be greatly missed.”
