Wise and modest Mike
MIKE STUDLEY, Father of the NUJ chapel at the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo has been nominated as a union hero by the chief sub of the Echo, Paul Allison, for the “thousands of hours he has put in for Liverpool NUJ members, and Liverpool branch, for almost three decades.
“Mike is a man of great integrity,” Paul Allison says. “In all the time I have known him I have never heard him say a harsh word against anybody, including those he confronts on behalf of the chapel, from which he only recently stepped down as FOC.
“Mike has an incredible all-round knowledge of employment and union law, which has helped him win many victories on behalf of individuals and the chapel. His commonsense attitude enables him to lead the chapel to the limit when in conflict with management, but his wisdom tells him when to warn members of the consequences of escalation.”
Mike Studley was made an NUJ Member of Honour at the annual conference in 2005. In his union career, colleague Peter Grant told delegates, Mike Studley had been Father of the Chapel at every workplace, except one, Southampton — where he was NUJ branch secretary.
In response Mike Studley said: “Working for the NUJ has given me more satisfaction than anything else I have done. Promoting trade unionism has been a personal crusade.”
