Georger Viner scholars
SEVENTY people came to the party in London in February to honour this year’s students who are being supported by the NUJ’s George Viner Memorial Fund. The charity — named after a former NUJ training officer — provides scholarships for black and Asian journalism students.
The aim is to ensure that journalists reflect the diversity of the communities they report on. Seasoned black journalists Angela Saini, a science writer, Guardian columnist Joseph Harker and Sky presenter Marverine Cole shared their tips on how young journalists can work their way through the newsroom.
Ten students have been given bursaries this year — seen above with guest speakers and members of the George Viner Memorial Trust. Four in broadcasting are being funded by the BBC; they will receive paid work experience placements and help from BBC mentors.
