Norfolk members go public

UNION MEMBERS in Norfolk are taking their message to save the local media to the public at rallies around the county. In March a dozen staff from the North Norfolk News in Cromer and its sister papers in the Archant group were in town to highlight plans to shed 34 editorial jobs.

In two hours more than 200 people signed a petition in support of the NUJ’s fight to save the jobs. Archant FoC Pete Kelley said: “We found that many people understood the problems we are facing and are worried about the effect on local newspapers.”

The Cromer event followed a similar demonstration in Norwich in February.

Archant originally said it wanted to shed 54 editorial jobs because of the downturn in revenue and the introduction of a new editorial system, but following the union’s high profile campaign, including a Facebook site and a Downing Street petition, the losses were scaled down to 34.

But the campaign goes on, with further demonstrations planned for North Walsham and Dereham.
