Victims of Palestinian infighting
ISAM AL REMAWI, a camera operator with the Palestine News and Information Agency, was held for two weeks in January by the Palestine Authority’s Preventive Security Services. There are reports that he was beaten.
The International Federation of Journalists has condemned the unjustified detention of Palestinian journalists. “We condemn the arbitrary arrests and detention of journalists,” said General Secretary Aidan White. “Isam was arrested without any charges against him and a number of his colleagues remain in jail with no prospects of trial or even being charged.” Six journalists are believed to be in the Palestinian Authority’s custody.
The IFJ says that journalists are increasingly victims of the standoff between the Palestinian Authority based in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza.
