Lifelong socialist

SIMON VEVERS, who has died aged 54, was a committed socialist and trade unionist. He started writing for NewsLine in his late teens and covered nearly all the major industrial and social struggles of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Going freelance in 1987, he researched the centenary history of the National Union of Mineworkers, wrote for trade union journals and subbed on dozens of magazines.

Diagnosed with RSI in the early 1990s, he helped formulate the NUJ response to the new technology speed-up in the industry. Writing for Nursery World, he became an expert on childcare and early learning.
