Put people first: a welcome for Obama

THE NUJ is asking members to support the “Put People First” demonstration on March 28, just before the G20 summit in London on April 2, which US President Barack Obama will attend on his first visit to Europe.

Britain’s unions are joining development groups, environmental organisations and faith groups to march for jobs, justice and climate.

With the world economy in meltdown and UK unemployment heading for 3 million, the union wants to make public its concern.

General Secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Journalists know as well as anybody that recession and unemployment will see poverty, crime and social division all increase.

“Too much of the economy has been built on a bubble created by banks, hedge funds and financiers. People are rightly angry.

“The march will express people’s rage. There should also be hope. This is also an opportunity to build a fairer and greener world as a way out of recession.”
