TWO SPECIAL OFFERS

TOGETHER, REMEMBERING THE MINERS

MARCH 12 is the 25th anniversary of the start of the miners’ strike in Britain and the work of two NUJ members to mark it will come together in a London theatre.

Newcastle freelance Ed Waugh is the co-writer of a play, Maggie’s End, a dark comedy that begins with the death of Margaret Thatcher, whose government emerged triumphant from the year-long dispute.

The play, which is sponsored by miners’ union and other unions, was well reviewed when it opened at the Gala Theatre in Durham last October.

In April it will run for two weeks at the Shaw Theatre in London, and on April 8 there will be a special performance with a presentation on a book on the strike.

The book, Shafted: The Media, the Miners’ Strike and the Aftermath, is edited by Yorkshire freelance Granville Williams and published by the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom, to which the NUJ is affiliated.

It analyses the pressures on journalists who reported the strike, with accounts from prominent reporters, among them Nick Jones of the BBC, Pete Lazenby of the Yorkshire Evening Post and Paul Routledge of The Times.

£10 for the book

Shafted costs £9.99 and can be bought online at cpbf.org.uk/shafted for £12.50 including postage.
