A dream comes true

A SUB-EDITOR’S story of 50 years following Liverpool FC has been nominated for the Best New Writer title in the British Sports Books Awards.

Anfield Of Dreams: A Kopite’s Odyssey From The Second Division To Sublime Istanbul is Neil Dunkin’s first book. The NUJ life member says: “The book has received good reviews but I never expected it to be up for any kind of prize. I genuinely thought it must have been some mistake.”

Neil Dunkin started at the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, then moved to Manchester to work on the Express and Guardian.

When newspaper production ceased in Manchester he subbed on the Mirror in London and subsequently the Daily Telegraph, where he took redundancy in 2005. His pay-off allowed him to complete his account of five decades supporting Liverpool.

There’s more to the book than football, though. “It’s not just ‘Dalglish scored the winner’”, he says. “It also covers hobnobbing with the Beatles in the Cavern, drunken escapades during my newspaper career and hairy moments climbing in the Andes.”

Anfield Of Dreams is published by Know The Score Books, price £8.99.
