Support your local trades council

IN JANUARY London Freelance Branch affiliated to two London trades councils — Barnet and Waltham Forest.

Trades councils are a meeting point for trade unionists in a town, they are part of the structure of the TUC, and are enjoying a modest revival.

I am now the branch’s delegate to Barnet TUC and have become its publicity officer.

We are campaigning together on issues that affect us all, particularly the privatisation of council services — well reported by local media — and supporting each other in our own struggles, such as the victimisation of RMT reps on London Underground or the part-privatisation of Royal Mail.

I can’t promise that all trades councils will be as lively as Barnet, but I urge NUJ members to seek out their local TUC.

In the recession we are going to need the help of other trade unionists like never before.
