‘Millions for members’ in Newsquest job switch case
THE HERALD group in Glasgow could be forced to pay out up to £2 million to journalists who were forced to re-apply for their own jobs.
The union has told members at The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times that Newsquest’s handling of the procedure could result in a payout of between £5,000 and £10,000 per union member from a legal claim.
The letter, which gives members the chance to opt out of the claim, says lawyers believe there is “a very high chance of success”.
Last autumn Newsquest announced plans to reduce the workforce, by inviting all but a handful of its 250 staff to reapply for 40 fewer posts.
Paul Holleran, NUJ Scottish organiser, said: “We will be proceeding with claims on behalf of all 250 NUJ members who were involved”.
The behaviour of Newsquest bosses in Glasgow outraged many Scottish politicians.
