Dorset Journalist of the Year

BOURNEMOUTH Daily Echo journalists picked up two awards at the Dorset Journalist of the Year presentations, organised by the NUJ’s Bournemouth branch.

Reporter of the Year was the Daily Echo’s Melanie Vass and Photographer of the Year her colleague Richard Crease.

For the second year running, reporter Miriam Phillips of sister title the Dorset Echo in Weymouth was named Young Journalist of the Year.

She was praised for taking the trouble to get three great follow-ups to apparently ordinary stories.

The special Judges’ Award was claimed by Neil Glass for his book Squandered, which outlines how government wastes taxpayers’ money.

The presentations were followed by a debate on the future of regional journalism. Speakers included local editors and NUJ Deputy General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet.
