TV REPORTER Marco Antonio Estrada was gunned down and killed in Chiquimula, Guatemala on June 8. He had reported on organised crime for the national TV programme Tele Diario.

TWO JOURNALISTS were shot dead in Peru when police opened fire on a protest of over 1,000 indigenous people protesting at laws allowing the government to sell their land to multinationals.

Two more journalists have been killed in the Philippines in separate incidents. Jojo Trajano was shot by suspected drug peddlers when joining police officers on a raid. Crispin Perez was stabbed and shot shortly after airing his morning radio show; the local governor has said the incident was “politically motivated”.

American reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee, accused of entering North Korea illegally and carrying out “hostile acts”, have been sentenced by a closed court to 12 years hard labour.
