Two are shot dead in Mexico

TWO MEXICAN journalists have been assassinated in the northern state of Durango. Eliseo Barron Hernandez of La Opinion de Torreon was taken from his home in front of his wife and children. His body was found later in a canal. His last published article exposed local police corruption.

Carlos Ortega Melo Samper, a reporter for El Tiempo de Durango, was shot three times in the head after being ambushed by two pickup trucks. He had been threatened by local government officials and was investigating a police officer over alleged corruption.
