You’re never alone with the NUJ

IN JULY last year I was made redundant as “Group Editor” of The Journal Publishing Co of Derby at five minutes’ notice. I immediately contacted Northern Organiser Chris Morley who gave the employer an opportunity to settle out of court. The employer declined to do so — and the matter was referred to Thompsons solicitors.

After much correspondence, we settled out of court just before we were due at the Employment Tribunal. The modest payment is subject to a confidentiality clause.

The company wasted thousands of pounds in costs when it could have settled in August, but the important lessons are:

the NUJ and Thompsons supported me all the way in any decision I took; and

this employer won’t try it on again with any NUJ member in a hurry.

You are never alone when you are in the NUJ.
