Don’t pay this firm to register under the DPA
AS A FREELANCE I recently received a letter from “DPA Registrations” advising me that I need to register under the Data Protection Act on peril of a £5,000 fine. The letter has an official feel to it, and the name will of course have a familiar ring, but on checking their website I found the following:
“We are in no way associated with, or working on behalf of, or commissioned by any public body or government department. The payment comprises both a registration fee to the Information Commissioner, and an administration fee for our services.”
This has obviously been put there to ensure they comply with the letter of the law.
These people have also tried it on with barristers; you can find the Bar Council’s reaction at: http://tinyurl.com/lqu93h
Please don’t fall for this scam.
