A great mentor
REG VAUGHAN, former chief sub-editor of the Financial Times’ UK company news section, has died, aged 65. He was at the FT for 35 years, joining in 1960, aged 17, as a prices room clerk. After working as a companies sub-editor and City reporter, he led the UK companies subs desk for 12 years before his retirement.
Reg was a great motivator and mentor to younger journalists, generous with his time and his knowledge of the technicalities of financial journalism.
He was not only a staunch socialist and trade unionist himself, but actively encouraged others to join the NUJ. He believed in equality and would argue passionately with management on behalf of his team, creating a fierce loyalty.
