The cycling reporter

FRANK CONEYBEER, a union member since 1950, has died at the age of 84.

After working for the Exmouth Chronicle, he became the Taunton district reporter for the Western Morning News. The only way to get to jobs was by bicycle and he cycled many miles around the area in all weathers.

Frank regarded his profession as a craft and took pride in refining his skills as a writer. As well as news reporting, he established himself as a sports writer, especially for cricket. He became a part of the scene at Somerset County Cricket ground, recording many famous moments.

Frank was treasurer of the Taunton and West Somerset NUJ branch for many years. He also represented the branch at union conferences.

In the mid-1970s he moved back to his home city of Exeter to become a press officer for Devon County Council. He understood what journalists required and in his new role provided them with facts, not spin.
