Editor and playwright

A JOURNALIST for 40 years, Paddy Broughton has died aged 72. He was a long-standing NUJ member. As his wife Jenny said, “it was the only organisation he ever joined”.

Born in Derby, Paddy Broughton started his career on the Derbyshire Advertiser, moving on to the Gloucestershire Echo before becoming editor of the Sutton & Cheam Advertiser and then the Epsom & Leatherhead Advertiser.

In 1969 he moved to Exeter in 1969 to sub on the Express & Echo and then became editor again, at the Exeter Weekly News and East Devon News. He was a columnist for the Exeter Flying Post up to the time of his death.

Paddy Broughton also wrote plays that were produced at the Bush Theatre in London, the Liverpool Playhouse and Off Broadway, and he was press officer at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter for 15 years.
