Trade union prize for Alan Johnston freedom pic
A PHOTO from the Journalist in August last year won the top picture prize in the annual TUC awards for trade union communications.
The picture was taken by Glasgow freelance Alan Wylie as the Journalist’s Peter Murray interviewed Alan Johnston, just days after his release from the Gaza hell-hole where he had been held hostage for 114 days.
Receiving the award, Alan Wylie said: “I was amazed when the Journalist asked me to photograph Alan Johnston at short notice. I thought they were sending me somewhere exotic, but when I asked, ‘where?’ they said, just down the road in Glasgow’s West End.”
The judges said it was “a telling pic that speaks volumes about the taste of freedom.”
On the Journalist itself, the judges said it had “good layout and informative articles — some of a very high standard. But some judges felt that the headlines did not reflect the interest in the articles and that some fresh thoughts on tone and content would help the title shine.”
