‘Welcome back to Chile’

A PHOTOGRAPHER and NUJ member exiled from Chile 30 years ago was welcomed to the country’s embassy in London for the first time to open an exhibition of his work.

Carlos Reyes-Manzo fled from General Augusto Pinochet’s bloody regime in 1978 and became active in the democratic opposition.

Ambassador Rafael Moreno praised Carlos Reyes as “one of those who had fought to restore democracy in our country”. He invited him to mount an exhibition in the presidential palace.

Carlos Reyes fled Chile after being captured by General Pinochet’s soldiers and detained and tortured for six months. He escaped to Panama but was recaptured and escaped again in London while in transit back to Chile.
