Handsome win at Racing Post
The NUJ has won official recognition at the Racing Post — ending one of its most bitter disputes in the UK national press.
The union was denied representation rights when the title was owned by Trinity Mirror by a “sweetheart” agreement with the British Association of Journalists, an organisation with no members at the paper — even though an overwhelming majority of staff were NUJ members. But progress was made after the Post was sold to an independent consortium last year.
The deal follows a settlement that saw the majority of journalists on the title win compensation of six and a half weeks pay through an employment tribunal judgement over the way Trinity Mirror sold the paper.
NUJ National Newspapers Organiser Barry Fitzpatrick, said: “The previous owners deliberately denied Racing Post journalists a voice at work. We’re delighted that NUJ members have finally achieved justice.”
